Pest Control in Ansonia, Connecticut

Ansonia is a narrow river city. The Naugatuck runs down the middle, Route 8 runs right beside it, and the land rises steeply on both sides. The old downtown and the mill-era neighborhoods sit on the flat ground by the river, just upstream from Derby. Newer homes climb the slopes on wooded lots with steep driveways.

That split shows up in the calls. Down in the valley, older homes and multi-families deal with mice and rats working through aging foundations. Up on the hills, wooded lots bring deer, ticks, carpenter ants and yellow jackets. Cold air settles in the valley on fall nights, and the mice in the low neighborhoods move indoors about as soon as it does.

Cellar windows and bulkheads down in the valley

Houses close to the Naugatuck tend to have damp basements and old stone or brick foundations. Wood-frame two- and three-families sit close together, so pests travel easily from one yard to the next. Mice and rats use the gaps around cellar windows, bulkhead doors and the pipes and wires running through the foundation. That's where mouse and rat control for old stone cellars starts. Rats are mostly a river-edge problem here, turning up around sheds, compost and garbage cans in the yards closest to the water. Mention them separately when you call, since rat work takes more time outdoors than a mouse job does.

Landlords and owners of multi-family houses call often. In those buildings, it works far better when every unit and the shared basement get done on the same visit, so mention how many units there are when you call so the tech can plan the time and access. Sealing in late summer, before the first cold nights, saves a lot of trouble in November.

Ticks and ants on the hillside lots

Up the hills, it's postwar capes, raised ranches and newer colonials backing onto the woods, and the raised ranches get mice through the garage the same as anywhere. The Ansonia Nature Center and other wooded open space bring wildlife close to the backyards, and deer ticks wait along the yard edge. Yard spraying for ticks on wooded hillside lots is a common request, and so is yellow jacket removal from stone walls and lawns in August.

Steep lots add a twist. Water runs down toward the house and pools against the foundation on the uphill side, and that damp wall is where carpenter ants tend to show up first. Point it out to the tech. Our guide to deer ticks in the yard applies here as much as in Shelton, and Seymour, just up Route 8, has much the same mix.
