Pest Control in Shelton, Connecticut

Ants in the sills, mice in the fieldstone, ticks along the stone walls. Give us a call and we'll find you someone who knows Shelton houses.

If you've lived in Shelton more than a year or two, you already know the calendar. Carpenter ants turn up on the kitchen counter in April. Yellow jackets move into the stone wall by August, usually the stretch you mow along. And sometime in October, after the first properly cold night, a mouse finds its way up out of the fieldstone basement and into the pantry. None of it is unusual for a town with this many woods and this many old houses. It's still no fun to live with.

We run a phone line for Shelton and the towns around it. You call, tell us what you're seeing, and we connect you with an independent, licensed pest control company that works your part of town. We don't do the treatments ourselves, and we'd rather say so plainly at the start. The company that comes out does the inspection, sets the price and does the work.

Most calls fall into a handful of jobs: mice in an old fieldstone basement, carpenter ants working on a damp sill, ticks along the wooded edge of the yard and yellow jackets in the lawn or the wall. Winged bugs by the basement window in spring deserve a second look, since they're sometimes termites rather than ants. Not sure what you have? Describe it as best you can. Whoever picks up has heard most of it before.

A River Town With a Lot of Stone Wall

Shelton sits on the west bank of the Housatonic, at the bottom of the Lower Naugatuck Valley, with Route 8 running up the middle. Downtown grew up along the river, with the Riverwalk and the old mill blocks down low and the streets climbing steeply behind them. Head north on Route 110 and you pass Indian Well State Park and Lake Housatonic. Head west and you're into Huntington, where the Far Mill River winds through, and then White Hills, which still has farm fields, orchards and more stone wall than anyone could count.

That mix explains most of what people call about. The river and the Shelton Lakes ponds (Pine Lake, Silent Waters, Hope Lake) keep the ground damp, which suits mosquitoes in July and carpenter ants all year. The woods bring deer right up to the back steps, and where there are deer and leaf litter there are deer ticks. The stone walls that once marked pasture lines now hold mice, chipmunks and, come late summer, yellow jacket nests. Our deer tick guide goes into why those walls matter so much.

Then there are the houses themselves. Huntington Green dates to the early 1700s, and the historic district along Church Street and Huntington Street has homes that have been settling for two or three centuries. A lot of older Shelton houses sit on fieldstone, and the mortar between the stones doesn't last forever. Honestly, most mouse trouble in these homes comes back to the same few spots: the sill line, the bulkhead door and the hole where the oil fill pipe goes through. The fall mouse-proofing checklist walks through each one. Newer houses off Bridgeport Avenue are tighter, but deep mulch beds and decks facing the tree line still invite ants and, now and then, termites.

It isn't only Shelton, either. Derby's hillside two-families across the bridge get the same fall mice, and the Pequonnock valley in Trumbull runs on much the same calendar.

  • By the river and the lakes: mosquitoes, damp-wood ants, the odd Norway rat
  • Wooded lots and stone walls: deer ticks, chipmunks, yellow jackets
  • Old colonials and capes: mice, carpenter ants, cluster flies in the attic
  • Newer subdivisions: ants in the mulch, paper wasps under the deck rail

Our Approach

One number to call. No working down a list of companies and leaving five voicemails. Describe the problem once and we'll take it from there. The list of pest services shows what calls usually cover.

We ask about the house. A 1700s colonial near Huntington Green and a new build off Bridgeport Avenue don't get mice the same way. We ask what kind of home you have so the tech who comes out isn't starting cold.

Plain about how it works. We're a referral line. Price, scheduling and any guarantee come from the company doing the work, and you hear all of it before anything starts. How a call works.

Shelton and the Valley. Derby, Ansonia, Seymour, Monroe, Trumbull, Stratford and Oxford are all on the list of towns we cover.

The Year in Shelton Pests

March to May: swarmers and sills
Carpenter ants wake up inside warm walls, and on the first truly warm days termites may swarm in the basement. Tick nymphs start feeding as the yard greens up.
June to August: walls and water
Yellow jacket colonies grow fast in lawns and stone walls. Mosquitoes breed along the Housatonic, around the Shelton Lakes ponds and in any gutter that's clogged.
September to November: the first cold nights
Mice come in from the walls and woods once nights drop into the 40s. Stink bugs and cluster flies line up on the sunny side of the house. Adult ticks are out through raking season.
December to February: scratching in the walls
Mice that got in during the fall make themselves heard at night. Cluster flies buzz at attic windows on mild afternoons. A good stretch to plan sealing work before spring.

Ant Control
Carpenter ants, pavement ants and odorous house ants. The tech goes after the nest instead of just spraying the trail.

Tick and Mosquito Yard Treatment
Yard treatments aimed at deer ticks in the leaf litter and mosquitoes near the river, the lakes and the wet spots.
Wasp, Hornet and Yellow Jacket Control
Ground nests in lawns and stone walls, paper nests under the eaves and big hornet nests in the trees. Best left to someone with the gear.
Termite Control
Eastern subterranean termites live in the soil and come up into wood. A local tech inspects, confirms and treats.
Stink Bugs and Fall Invaders
Brown marmorated stink bugs and cluster flies crowd attics each fall. Spotted lanternflies turn up on trees and decks too.

Questions from Neighbors

Do you send someone out yourselves?

No. We answer the phone and pass you along to an independent, licensed company that serves Shelton. They do the inspection and treatment, and they set the price and the schedule.

Which parts of Shelton get covered?

All of it, from downtown by the river to Huntington, White Hills and the newer streets off Bridgeport Avenue. Derby, Monroe, Trumbull and the other nearby towns are covered too.

What's this going to cost me?

That depends on the pest, the house and how long it's been going on. The company that comes out gives you the price after hearing the details or seeing the place. We don't set it.

We have ants now and mice every fall. Should I mention both?

Please do. Plenty of Shelton homes have both, and the tech can look at everything on one visit.
